Professional Licensure Disclosure

GENERAL INFORMATION & DISCLOSURES

Background

Mission University (Mission U) offers several programs leading to professional licensure within the State of Missouri. States vary in what professions they require to be licensed and how licensure is acquired or functions. Some states require an individual to graduate from an approved program. Others require an individual to obtain additional coursework, additional fieldwork or experience, reference checks, criminal background checks, fingerprint submissions, passage of post-graduation state licensing exams, additional application and licensing fees, or other requirements, including the need to meet the certification requirements of a national organization. Continuing education may also be required for maintenance of certification/licensure.

Accreditation

Mission University (Mission U) is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), a regional accreditation body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, and the Association for Biblical Higher Education (ABHE), a national accreditation body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

State Authorization

State Authorization refers to federal, state, and professional licensing board regulations that impact online education offered across state lines. Compliance with these regulations ensures that a degree from Mission University (Mission U) will be recognized. However, the requirements for licensure vary from state to state. Mission U is a member of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreement (NC-SARA) which allows us to provide distance learning programs (both online and in the form of supervised field experiences) and coursework to residents of states other than Missouri. NC-SARA membership, however, does not grant reciprocity or exempt us from state professional licensing requirements. As a result, licensing requirements in Missouri may not be recognized as sufficient to obtain a license in any other state.

Professional Licensure/Certification

Under NC-SARA regulations, certain disclosures are required for academic programs leading to professional licensure regardless of the modality they are offered. At Mission University (Mission U), these professional academic programs are designed to, and may only, fulfill the educational prerequisites for licensure only in Missouri. This means that, when a student graduates from a licensure program at Mission U, he or she has the minimum educational qualifications to apply for Missouri licensure. For other U.S. states and territories, this may or may not be the case, as educational requirements vary from state to state.

Relocation

Relocating while in the course of a program to another state may impact if the student can remain in the program, meet the state licensure requirements and/or continue to receive financial aid funding. Prior to considering relocation, please contact your program advisor to discuss authorization and licensure eligibility requirements.

International Students

Prior to enrolling in any program at Mission University (Mission U), prospective students living and/or working outside of the United States should confirm with the appropriate certifying agency whether successful completion of any degree program at Mission U will meet the credentialing requirements of the country in which they intend to seek employment, as to certain types of employment or for advanced/specialized educational programs.

Students' Responsibility

Students will receive and should review the professional licensure disclosure and specific academic requirements for the program in which they are enrolling, including those related to practicum/internship as well as pre-qualifications for licensure such as the need for a criminal background check, etc. We highly recommend that students contact the appropriate Mission University (Mission U) Department Head listed below and applicable licensure board(s) in their state of residence or in the state where they intend to obtain a license before beginning an academic program at Mission U that leads to licensure and prior to beginning any internship/practicum. Please be advised that state laws, regulations, and policies may change at any time, and many licensure boards have additional requirements beyond successful degree completion to obtain a license.

Federal Regulation

Pursuant to 34 CFR § 668.43(a)(5)(v), the curriculum for programs customarily leading to licensure at Mission University have been designed to meet the licensure/certification requirements in Missouri as well as preparing students to apply for licensure exams in the State of Missouri.  The licensure boards in each state are responsible for establishing the requirements for licensure/certification for their state. Students who intend to move to any state other than Missouri need to review the professional licensure disclosures pertaining to their program and consult with that state’s professional licensing board(s).  The state professional licensing boards make the ultimate decision as to whether or not an individual will be eligible to sit for licensure based on the rules and regulations in place at the time the individual submits their application for licensure.
